Good Typography vs. Flashy Typography

I recently posted on Twitter that I wasn’t a huge fan of Loft Resumes. I don’t mean to discourage those that use the service or have used it and had good results; it’s just not my cup of tea.

I think for my money it comes to flash over content and a huge dose of overcomplication. I don’t think your resume should have raster images and I don’t think your resume should have infographics. Perhaps it’s a roots thing, perhaps something of my minimal nature, but I would love to see more appreciation for the elegant, more understated. When my mind hears “Great Examples of Typography”, I tend to think of things like this more than this

More often than not, I think people confuse flashy typography with good typography. For my money, good typography is often subtle and more calculated. It reflects content.
